Chicory 'Hollandse Middelvroeg' BIO De Bolster (2050)
The 'Hollandse Middelvroeg' chicory variety is particularly suitable for traditional cultivation: pulling with casing soil.
The cultivation of chicory consists of two steps. Step 1: You start with the cultivation of the taproot (sow in May, harvest in the months October to December). Step 2: pulling the chicory.
Step 1: Cultivating the taproot
Cultivation of the carrots must take place on unfertilised soil. Sow in May at a row distance of 35 cm, later thin out to 12 cm. The seed must be sown shallow. At the end of October, November and December the roots can be uprooted. Cut off the foliage just above the growth point, about 3 cm above the root neck (can also be done with the shovel).
Step 2: pulling out the chicory
It is important that growth is not too rapid and that the soil in which the roots are placed is poor, i.e. contains little nitrogen. Pulling can be done in a pit outside, under flat gas or greenhouse and even in a cool cellar (in a crate or bucket). Place the roots together upright or slightly sloping in the soil, the top just above ground level. Then cover with a loose layer of soil of about 15 cm. As soon as moderate frost is expected, cover the pit. At the end of the winter the heads are big enough. It goes without saying that the heads will be good in a warmer place sooner.
