Metasequoia dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a deciduous conifer usually classified today in the cypress family (Cupressaceae). They are the largest trees in the world, growing to over 100 meters in height and over 1,500 years old. The water cypress is found in China on rocky banks and moist places.

From a distance, the Metasequoia dawn redwood looks like the (Taxodium distichum). It is considered a living fossil. The species was quite common in East Asia (Japan, Korea and China) before the last ice age. In the Tertiary, the genus Metasequoia was common in the northern hemisphere as fossils show. Now the tree is found wild only in central China in a closed valley in the Shui-Hsa-Pal valley and in Hubei province. Since 1960, the water cypress has been mass propagated by growers through cuttings and seeding.

The metasequoia is a tree that takes on spectacular hues in autumn and is therefore widely used in the bonsai world.  It is a fairly fast-growing, undemanding tree.

To germinate, a stratification of 2 months is needed, then soaking for a day to later place them in a seedbed with a sandy substrate in a sheltered spot. Germination can be irregular, from a few weeks to several months.

These robust trees with fibrous bark are a great addition to your garden but also ideal for bonsai.
