Onion ‘Red Baron’ – ORGANIC De Bolster (2021)
Sowing onions need a relatively long time to grow and ripen well. It is best to sow in the period from March to mid-April. Sow at a row distance of 25 cm, and thin out at 5 to 10cm in the row. Seeding depth: about 5mm. Strongly scented plants such as chamomile, savory and carrots in the immediate vicinity of the onions could have a disruptive effect on the onion fly.
The best soil for onions is relatively heavy, clayey soil. This certainly also applies to the 'Red Baron'.
In August and September the foliage will lie flat and die off. Pull the onions out of the soil with foliage and all and let them dry in a well ventilated place (not in direct sunlight). If they are kept cool and dry, the onions can be stored until spring.
