The cannibal tomato is native to Tahiti, Fiji and other islands in the Pacific Ocean. Outside these areas it is best grown as a container plant. The fruits are edible, but have a slightly bitter taste that diminishes when cooked. The leaves can be used in salads. The roots contain poisonous alkaloids. Solanum anthropophagorum, Solanum viride, Solanum patameense, Solanum polynesicum and Solanum savaiense It is a bushy plant that can reach a height of about 1.5m. The leaves are ovate and pointed. The flowers resemble those of other nightshades (Solanum). They are white and have five petals and yellow stamens. After fertilization the flowers are red, 2-3 cm large, bright red, smooth, shiny berries that resemble the tomato.
