Professional Cultivation
De Bolster's pumpkins have been developed for organic arable farming. Our slender types are remarkably uniform in size and shelf life. This plant type has the property that the field grows rapidly, which suppresses weeds. Our 'bush' types are very productive and give the possibility to control weeds mechanically for a longer period of time.
Sowing
Sow pumpkin seeds on the solid, moist soil layer. This is usually at a depth of 3-5 cm. For optimal germination it is important that the soil at sowing depth has a temperature of at least 18°C at the time of sowing and the following week. A soil that is too cold or too wet slows down the germination process, so that fungi and bacteria can attack the germinating seeds. Above 22°C the germination process is very fast, so these plant pathogens have less chance to strike.
Harvesting and storage
As soon as the fruit stem begins to subside and the leaf begins to die off, the fruit is ripe for harvesting. For the best shelf life it is advisable to harvest the fruit as soon as possible after the first signs of ripening to prevent any sunburn damage. After harvesting, it is best to store the fruit at a temperature between 8°C and 12°C. It is important to keep the pumpkins well ventilated during storage.
