Gourd ‘Shenot Crown of Thorns’ / Cucurbita Pepo Ornamental Pumpkin – 10 seeds TessGruun
Gourd ‘Crown of Thorns’ provides interesting textures and colour at the table or around the house during the autumn period. The round and colourful fruits have five pairs of incurving prongs that are responsible for the name of this fruit, they look like a crown of thorns.
The pumpkins are beautiful, but not edible. They are ready for harvest about 95 days after sowing.
Sowing instructions:
Sow in late spring or early summer - April to June
Sow indoors no earlier than 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Use a rich compost and sow one seed per 7cm. The seeds have a rounded and a pointed end. Push the pointed end into the ground (never lay flat seeds like these flat on the ground, they will collect a lot of moisture and rot quickly). Plant them at a depth of about twice the length of the seed (1-2cm).
Put them in a warm place with natural light. The ideal germination temperature is 20-28°C. The seeds germinate quite quickly, in 7 - 10 days. Replant them outdoors once the soil is warmer and the plants have their first 'true' leaves.
The seeds can be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up in early summer, after about three months of frost free weather.
