Spinach 'New Zealand Tetragonia tetragonioides' ORGANIC De Bolster (1610)
'New Zealand' spinach has much more vigour than standard spinach, especially in width. The seeds germinate slowly and only at higher temperatures.
The name of the New Zealand spinach may be confusing. New Zealand spinach belongs to the family of Purslane (Portulacaceae) and also looks completely different than the standard spinach.
The leaves and stem tops can be picked regularly. The preparation method is the same as for spinach. Because the plants are sensitive to frost and the seeds only germinate at higher temperatures, it is best to sow in a container under glass in April. A wide planting distance (at least 50 cm) is desirable.
